      Emphasis and Tones

Before we start drawing, we’ve got to know the elements of a drawing namely the subject, the foreground and the background.

If you are drawing a spot-lighted ball on top of a table in a dark room, the subject would be the ball. The foreground would be the table and the background would be the dark wall of the room. It is important to show emphasis in a drawing so if the ball is the one that is well-lighted then the
ball is the one emphasized in the drawing.

In drawing, you’ve got to draw with respect to the light. Which part of the ball is highlighted? Which part of the ball is dark? Where is the shadow of
the ball on the table? You can add tones to define the light and the dark
part of the ball and the table. You can do this by using your 6B pencil. Add pressure on the sketch pad using your 6B pencil when you want the tone
to be darker. Try this exercise and see how it turns out. Feel free to use other subjects too if you want. Good luck.
